‘Atlan,’ produced in Iranian Documentary and Experimental Film Center (DEFC) and directed by Moein Karimoddini, vied with other 20 world documentaries focusing on rural themes to win the trophy. New York was the festival’s hub where documentaries were on screen for 3 days.
Rural Route’s 12th edition combined new long movies, classics, and short films. ‘Atlan’ relates the story of a horse-trainer, Ali Golnejad and his beloved horse, Ilhan, which is supposed to bring much success and glory to the family. Ali plans to marry his fiancé using the prize money won by Ilhan, but the events take a different turn to the worse and Ilhan receives an unfavorable draw, posing difficulties for Ali to grapple with winning the prize along Ilhan.
The documentary had been screened in several festivals including Dutch International Documentary Film Festival (IDFA), Sebastopol Documentary Film Festival and Tiburon Film Festival in California, Zurich Film Festival in Switzerland and in Cannes’ Doc Corners special section. It was also nominated for Best Long Documentary Award in Asia Pacific Screen Awards in Australia and the 17th TRT Documentary Award in Turkey.
